The Parliament Accounts Committee has ordered the Executive Secretary of the National Identification Authority (NIA), Prof. Kenneth Attafuah, to repay over GH¢98,000.
This amount was deducted from the Authority’s account as a penalty for the delayed transfer of Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) contributions.
The NIA, in failing to promptly remit SSNIT contributions, used the Authority’s funds to cover the penalty. The Public Accounts Committee has affirmed that Prof. Ken Attafuah and the financial controller should be held accountable for the cost of the penalty, in alignment with the Auditor General’s recommendation.
During a hearing before the Public Accounts Committee, Prof. Attafuah was given a one-month deadline to refund the amount. The committee found the explanation for not paying the withheld money to SSNIT unacceptable and has upheld the Auditor General’s recommendation for the Chief Executive and the Financial Controller to refund the money to the recovery account of the Auditor General within one month.
