President Akufo-Addo has reassured the nation that the recent reshuffle of Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta will not disrupt Ghana’s ongoing bailout package with the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
During his State of the Nation Address in Parliament, Akufo-Addo emphasized the government’s commitment to upholding the terms agreed upon with the IMF.
The appointment of Dr. Mohammed Amin Adam as the new Finance Minister on February 14 marked the end of Ofori-Atta’s seven-year tenure as part of a cabinet reshuffle by President Akufo-Addo. Despite facing challenges and calls for resignation, Ofori-Atta remained Ghana’s longest-serving Finance Minister.
Calls for Ofori-Atta’s resignation came from various quarters, including around 80 NPP MPs in October 2022 and the NDC parliamentary caucus in February 2023. However, President Akufo-Addo dismissed these calls, urging Parliament to wait until discussions with the IMF had concluded.
Overall, President Akufo-Addo’s assurance that the reshuffle will not affect Ghana’s agreement with the IMF underscores the government’s commitment to restoring the economy to healthy growth. This reaffirmation provides stability and reassurance during a time of transition in the Finance Ministry.
