Mempeasem: One arrested; chief and community members flee

A recent attack on the Mempeasem community in the North Gonja District of the Savannah Region led to the arrest of one person, according to police sources in Daboya.

The assault, which occurred on February 12, caused extensive damage to properties valued at thousands of Cedis. This incident is believed to be a retaliation for a previous attack last year that resulted in residents abandoning the community out of fear.

The ongoing turmoil in Mempeasem is a result of chieftaincy and land boundary disputes between the Mamprusis and Gonjas. The creation of the Savannah and North East Regions from the Northern Region has exacerbated these conflicts, leading to violence in the community.

Both the Gonjas and Mamprusis have chosen to remain silent regarding the recent attacks in Mempeasem. In response, the Savannah Regional Police Command has deployed additional police personnel to the community to maintain law and order. The situation in Mempeasem remains tense as authorities work to address the underlying issues fueling the violence.
