Dr Clement Apaak, the Ranking Member of Parliament’s Education Committee, has addressed the issue of former President John Mahama’s knowledge of the challenges faced by teachers.

According to Dr Apaak, Mr Mahama is fully aware of the working conditions of teachers and is committed to addressing these issues if elected as president in the upcoming general elections.

Dr Apaak emphasized that making promises to improve teachers’ conditions of service without a comprehensive understanding of the nation’s financial situation would be unreasonable. He pointed out that Mr Mahama has stated that he will not engage in empty promises during his campaign, in contrast to the governing New Patriotic Party.

While Mr Mahama acknowledged that he could not promise immediate salary increments for teachers, he expressed awareness of the difficulties faced by educators, especially those in the pre-tertiary sector.

Dr Apaak further explained that the former President will evaluate the nation’s financial status upon assuming the presidency and involve all stakeholders in the decision-making process to address the challenges teachers face.

Dr Apaak also dismissed concerns that Mr Mahama’s honest approach to addressing the conditions of service for teachers would lead to a significant loss of votes in the upcoming general elections. He disagreed with concerns that the teaching fraternity would penalize Mr Mahama for his sincerity.
