A Political Science lecturer at the University of Ghana, Dr Kwame Asah Asante, has expressed concerns about the New Patriotic Party (NPP) struggling to retain seats in Greater Accra in the upcoming polls.
He pointed out that some incumbent Members of Parliament (MP) lost their candidature in the recently held parliamentary primaries, and if nothing is done about it, this trend might be replicated in the general elections.
Dr Asante emphasized that Greater Accra is a swing region, and more efforts must be channeled into campaigning for the new candidates to make the electorate familiar with them.
He also highlighted that the NPP’s failure to honor promises made to citizens might bite back at them in the polls, as the electorate would want to try someone new, likely someone from the opposition.
Speaking to JoyNews, Dr Asante said, “If we look at southern Ghana, the feeling towards the party in terms of their performance is not that good enough, so they need to add their game and make sure that whatever they have lost in terms of support, they will be able to regain.”
