The Member of Parliament for Zebilla, Cletus Avoka, has shed light on the challenges faced by lawmakers in Ghana, attributing perceived corruption within MPs to the constant financial demands placed on them, especially by constituents and the public.

In an interview with Starr FM, Mr Avoka highlighted how the relentless requests for financial assistance, including contributions for medical expenses, weddings, school fees, and other expenses, create a difficult environment for MPs to navigate without engaging in corrupt practices.

He emphasized that many MPs are forced to divert their attention from their legislative responsibilities to participate in business ventures in order to meet these financial obligations.

The lawmaker explained that the need for additional resources often drives MPs to seek external means of generating income, leading some to engage in activities that may compromise their integrity.

Mr Avoka pointed out that maintaining one’s seat as an MP often requires a certain level of financial resources, which can lead to MPs seeking alternative sources of income that may raise questions about integrity.

Overall, the insights shared by Mr Avoka highlight the complex financial pressures faced by MPs in Ghana and the challenges they encounter in balancing their duties as lawmakers with the demands for financial support from their constituents and the public.
