It’s time to forgive – Presby moderator tells late Dr J. B. Danquah’s family

The Presbyterian Church of Ghana moderator has called on the family of the late Dr. J. B. Danquah to forgive and release the pain caused by the circumstances leading to his death.

Most Rev. Dr. Abraham Opare Kwakye emphasized living out the ideals of Dr. J. B. Danquah in promoting freedom, justice for all, and respect for traditional institutions.

He made this call during a remembrance service held at the Ebenezer Presbyterian Church of Ghana in Kyebi, where he urged everyone to follow in the spirit of J. B. Danquah and speak truth to power.

The event was graced by several prominent personalities, including President Akufo-Addo, Vice President Mahamudu Bawumiah, Majority leader Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu, and other ministers of state and MPs.

During the remembrance service, Okyehene Osagyefo Amoatia Ofori paid tribute to the late Dr. J. B. Danquah, highlighting his contributions to Okyeman, Akan cultural heritage, and Ghana’s independence struggle.

The Okyehene recounted the deplorable circumstances surrounding J. B. Danquah’s death, stating that the Nkrumah-led CPP government subjected him to a cruel burial and denied him a proper funeral rite for 59 years.

Despite all this, the Okyehene called for forgiveness, stating that time is a great healer of wounds and that the functionaries of the Nkrumah-led CPP should be forgiven.

He further emphasized the need to focus on a brighter future guided by hope, tolerance, and reverence for the opinions, lives, and dignity of all persons, regardless of their political views.

Okyehene described J. B. Danquah as someone who embodied respect for human dignity, culture, and traditions of all peoples, and the love for freedom of all men.

He concluded by stating that the vision and challenges of J. B. Danquah’s times should guide everyone towards preserving and entrenching a culture of peacefulness, respect for personal freedom, and political pluralism enjoyed by the people of Ghana.

The call for forgiveness and the celebration of Dr. J. B. Danquah’s legacy were central themes of the remembrance service, emphasizing the importance of forgiveness and the promotion of freedom, justice, and respect for all.
