Ketu North Member of Parliament (MP), James Klutse Avedzi, has shared some valuable advice for the new ministerial nominees. He suggested that the nominees should focus on completing ongoing projects rather than starting new ones after approval.
Avedzi emphasized that the limited time available to the new ministers would make it difficult to execute any new projects. He discussed on JoyNews on February 14, saying that new ministerial ideas take time to manifest and implement, which is something that may not be feasible given the nine months remaining until the election.
Specifically, Avedzi advised the new Finance Minister nominee to thoroughly study the ministry’s tax policies and look for innovative ways to increase the tax gap. He stressed the importance of improving the tax system by reviewing existing taxes, withdrawing or canceling unnecessary ones, and expanding those that will remain.
Furthermore, Avedzi warned that the government might try to pressure the new Finance Minister into releasing funds for ‘election projects’, given that it is an election year. However, he urged the new minister to stand firm to prevent government expenditure from exceeding its limits.
Avedzi’s insights shed light on the challenges and priorities the new ministerial nominees should consider as they prepare to take up their positions.
