The management of the Ho Teaching Hospital in the Volta Region has made a heartfelt plea for assistance in building a mothers’ unit for the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU).
Dr. Bright Richard Danyo, Head of Child Health at the hospital, highlighted that mothers of preterm babies currently have to sleep on the floor due to lack of proper facilities. This appeal comes as Kokrooko Charities recently donated essential items such as incubators, sanitary towels, tissues, and refrigerators to the NICU.
Dr. Danyo expressed concern over the challenging conditions faced by mothers who spend up to two months at the hospital with their babies. Some of them are compelled to sleep in hallways on paper cartons, which is far from ideal for their well-being.
The creation of a mothers’ hostel is seen as crucial to improve the overall quality of care provided at the NICU. With an average of 300 babies admitted to the unit each year, having proper accommodations for their mothers is essential.
Kwami Sefa Kayi, Founder of Kokrooko Charities, acknowledged the need for a mothers’ hostel and assured that his organization would consider supporting this initiative. This support would greatly benefit the mothers and contribute to the enhanced care provided at the Ho Teaching Hospital.
The call for a mothers’ hostel at the hospital underscores the importance of ensuring adequate facilities for both patients and their families in healthcare settings. The provision of such a facility would not only improve the comfort and well-being of mothers but also enhance the overall care experience at the hospital.
