Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu officially resigned on Wednesday, February 21, following a meeting with the NPP caucus in Parliament and the executive, including President Akufo-Addo. However, there have been speculations and questions raised by political analyst Dr. Rasheed Draman about the circumstances that led to his resignation.
Dr. Draman has raised concerns about whether Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu was coerced into resigning, highlighting the importance of individuals’ willingness to engage in public service and the message sent by such resignations. During a press briefing in Parliament on Thursday, February 22, the First Deputy Speaker expressed his personal disappointment at Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu’s decision to step down. The NPP is scheduled to convene a meeting on Friday, February 23, at the Alisa Hotel in Accra to address his resignation and appoint a successor. Many anticipate that the current Deputy Majority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, will assume the role.
