The Ghana Chamber of Construction Industry has called on the Ministry of Roads and Highways to release a minimum of GH¢2 billion to compensate road contractors for their completed projects. According to the Chamber, this allocation is necessary as the government owes its members GH¢15 billion.
The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Chamber, Emmanuel Cheery, emphasized that while the allocation of GH¢150 million for addressing potholes nationwide is a positive step, it falls significantly short of the GH¢15 billion owed to its members.
Mr. Cheery highlighted the inadequacy of the funds, particularly as some of the potholes had deteriorated into manholes and gullies due to months of neglect. He stressed that the allocated funds were insufficient for the task at hand.
The Ministry of Roads and Highways recently announced it is allocating some GH¢150 million for fixing potholes across the country. This initiative aims to reduce the risk of accidents and extend the lifespan of the country’s road infrastructure.
Mr. Cheery expressed optimism that the minister-designate for Roads and Highways will take into account the concerns of the public and industry stakeholders and release additional funds for road construction. He also urged the government to make efforts to clear its debt to contractors, which amounts to over GH¢15 billion.
This call from the Ghana Chamber of Construction Industry sheds light on the urgent need for adequate funding to address the critical issue of road maintenance and safety in the country.
