Chief of Staff Akosua Frema Osei-Opare has presided over the inauguration of district assemblies in Suhum and Ayensuano in the Eastern Region, accentuating the pivotal role of decentralisation and local governance in Ghana’s democratic framework.

Representing President Nana Akufo-Addo on Monday, February 12, she commended all elected assembly and unit committee members for their triumph in the recent district-level elections.

Madam Osei-Opare reiterated the government’s dedication to enhancing decentralisation, as stipulated by the constitution, emphasizing the significance of district assemblies in fostering grassroots participation in governance and local decision-making.

With the inauguration of 259 district assemblies, Madam Osei-Opare underscored the strides made in decentralisation efforts since 1988. She emphasized that the government is now more connected to the populace than ever before, owing to the expanded network of district assemblies.

However, she acknowledged that despite decades of decentralisation endeavours, there persists a tendency among citizens to seek solutions from Accra for local issues.

She urged assembly members to challenge this norm by actively involving their constituents and providing essential public services at the local level.

The Chief of Staff also emphasized the necessity for ongoing capacity building and awareness campaigns to enhance citizens’ understanding of decentralisation and local governance.

She underscored the importance of forging robust partnerships and collaborations with local structures such as urban, town, and area councils to maximize the advantages of local governance.
