The transport sector in Ghana is set to undergo a digital revolution with the introduction of the Tap and Go card. Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia will be launching this landmark digital initiative on Monday, February 19, 2024, in Accra.

The Tap and Go card is a digital card preloaded with cash, allowing users to pay for their transport fares by simply tapping the card on a fixed machine on the bus. This system is similar to the Oyster Card in the United Kingdom and is designed to provide convenience and efficiency for commuters.

In addition to the physical card, the Tap and Go system will also offer a virtual version, giving users the option to download the Tap and Go app on their mobile phones. This will enable them to make payments through their mobile phones, providing an alternative to using the physical card.

The initiative, spearheaded by Vice President Bawumia, is part of the government’s efforts to promote a cashless society and formalize the economy. By introducing this digital payment method specifically for the transport sector, the government aims to modernize and formalize the informal transport sector through well-structured and tested technology.

State-owned transport services, including Metro Mass Transit and STC, will be among the first to operate the Tap and Go system. However, the system is also open to private transport owners, providing broad accessibility across the sector.

With this new digital initiative, the transport sector in Ghana is poised to embrace a more efficient, convenient, and modern method of payment. The Tap and Go system is expected to bring immense benefits to drivers, transport owners, and the general public, signaling a major leap forward for the transportation industry in Ghana.
