The Agona West Municipal Command of the Ghana National Fire Service has reported a decrease in the number of fire cases in the municipality.
According to DO3 DO III IS-haq Kambari, the Agona West Municipal Fire Commander, there were 37 fire cases last year, compared to 40 in 2022.
Kambari mentioned that the station recorded 13 cases in the first quarter of 2022, which decreased to 10 in 2023.
Additionally, in the second quarter of 2022, a total of 14 commercial fires were recorded, which decreased to 12 in 2023. Similarly, vehicular fire cases decreased from nine in the third quarter of 2022 to four in 2023.
He attributed these achievements to the performance of the dynamic fire volunteer groups formed by the station in the communities in the municipality.
However, he highlighted the worrisome challenge of fire outbreaks caused by human activities in the last quarter of the year. To address this, the Command has put in place effective mechanisms to intensify campaigns to reduce fire outbreaks during Christmas festivities.
Kambari also expressed concern about the lack of water hydrants, which has made it extremely difficult to control fire outbreaks to protect life and property.
As a solution, he has taken steps to design a water hydrants map for the Ghana Water Company Limited to facilitate the construction of new hydrants in strategic locations such as markets and government institutions.
He also warned against prank calls to fire stations, emphasizing that anyone caught making such calls would be prosecuted, as it creates problems for genuine distress callers seeking assistance.
