Residents of Tontokrom in the Ashanti Region are calling on the government to establish a community mining scheme in their area. This request stems from the ongoing tension between residents and Asanko Gold Mines regarding the company’s concession and security measures.

The conflict escalated on March 2 when a resident was fatally shot during a confrontation with private security officers of Asanko Gold Mine. This incident sparked outrage among the residents, leading to an attack on the company’s security personnel, resulting in two additional fatalities.

In a conversation with JoyNews, the residents expressed their frustration and issued an ultimatum to the government. They stated that if no action is taken by June 2024, they would boycott the upcoming election.

The Chief of Tontokrom highlighted the constant fear that residents live in, especially due to intimidation by the police and military allegedly influenced by the mining company. He pleaded for the establishment of a community mining scheme to safeguard their interests and prevent Asanko Mines from dominating their community.

The District Chief Executive of Amansie South, Clement Opoku Gyamfi, mentioned that there are considerations to pursue legal action against the mine to ensure justice prevails. He also highlighted that calm has returned to the community, enabling residents to resume their daily activities.

Overall, the plea for a community mining scheme in Tontokrom reflects the deep-rooted concerns and conflicts between residents and mining companies in the Ashanti Region. The government’s intervention is crucial to address these issues and ensure the well-being and rights of the local community are protected.
