The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has disconnected power to the Accra Sports Stadium due to a GH¢400,000 debt owed to the power distributor.
This disconnection comes as workers rush to put the facility in shape to host Friday’s Paris 2024 Olympic football qualifier match between Zambia’s women’s national team and Ghana’s Black Queens.
This is not the first time that ECG has cut power to the stadium over an outstanding debt. In March 2022, the National Task Force of ECG also disconnected power supply to the stadium over a debt amounting to GH¢508,000.00.
In April 2023, the Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCo) disconnected power supply to the Aliu Mahama Stadium in Tamale due to an outstanding debt of GH¢466,000.
Despite the power disconnection, the Accra Sports Stadium is expected to host the men’s football action at the 2023 African Games scheduled to start on March 8. It will also serve as the venue for sambo and wrestling events.
Other facilities managed by the National Sports Authority (NSA) have also suffered similar fates in the past. The ongoing disconnection of power to the Accra Sports Stadium raises concerns about the management of debts and electricity supply to sports facilities in Ghana.
