The managing director of the State Transport Corporation, Nana Akomea, has defended Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s vision and policies as a presidential candidate, arguing that they do not imply that the current government has failed in its mandate.
According to Nana Akomea, the citizens voted for President Akufo-Addo to retain power in 2020 because the government performed well in its first term, and the country would have been doing even better if not for the Covid-19 pandemic.
Offering an analogy, Nana Akomea likened the current situation to being on a difficult part of the road and facing turbulence in an aircraft. He expressed confidence that the country would soon steer the car onto a better road.
“The fact that the man says he would have a different path does not mean he is saying the current path is wrong,” he asserted.
Nana Akomea’s remarks come in response to criticisms that Dr. Bawumia was attempting to distance himself from the government’s failure during his first address to the nation as the NPP’s flagbearer.
Dr. Bawumia promised to abolish the E-Levy as part of efforts to make Ghana a cashless society and introduce policies that would help eliminate VAT on electricity, emissions tax, and betting tax, alongside touting some of his achievements, including digitalization.

Nana Akomea emphasized that Dr. Bawumia does not currently have executive powers to implement his policies, including abolishing taxes, but he is appealing to Ghanaians to vote for him and give him the constitutional mandate to implement his vision.
“If you give me executive authority, these are the things I am going to do,” Nana Akomea cited Dr. Bawumia as saying. This acknowledgment by Nana Akomea serves to reaffirm an important fact: Dr. Bawumia does not have the executive authority to implement his vision without the support of the Ghanaian citizens.
