Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party, recently presented his comprehensive vision for Ghana’s mining sector.
Emphasizing his commitment to effective regulation, supporting small-scale miners, and ensuring environmental protection, Dr. Bawumia highlighted the significant number of Ghanaians involved in small-scale mining, estimated at around one million individuals.
He stressed the importance of transitioning these miners towards responsible mining practices to create more wealth and contribute to environmental conservation efforts.
Dr. Bawumia further announced that, during his administration, every Ghanaian engaged in small-scale mining will be required to register under the Ghana Small Scale Miners Association using their Ghana Card.
He also expressed his goal of formalizing the Artisanal and Small-Scale Gold Mining (ASGM) sector to ensure that the activities of the entire value chain are sustainably and responsibly conducted.
Additionally, he mentioned plans to collaborate with large mining companies to convert abandoned shafts into community mining schemes and open new community mining schemes.
