Ayawaso West battles alarming rise in upper respiratory tract infections amidst escalating health concerns

In the Ayawaso West Municipality, there has been a concerning rise in Upper Respiratory Tract Infections (URTI), making it the top cause of morbidity for the third consecutive year. The municipality recorded a significant increase in URTI cases, with 25,700 cases reported in 2023, almost double the figures from 2021.

During an annual review meeting, it was revealed that over 172,000 illnesses were reported at various health facilities in the municipality, with URTI being the most prevalent. This worrying trend has been consistent since the establishment of the municipality.

Exposure to air pollutants such as fine particulate matter (PM2.5), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), and ozone have been linked to respiratory issues, including URTIs. These pollutants can irritate the respiratory tract, making individuals more susceptible to infections and weakening their immune systems.

Dr. Louisa Ademki Matey, the Municipal Health Director, highlighted the impact of deteriorating climate conditions and air pollution on respiratory infections. Accra recently ranked as the city with the most polluted air, prompting concerns from both the EPA and the Ghana Health Service.

Despite these findings, Dr. Matey refrained from immediately establishing a direct correlation between air pollution and the rising instances of URTIs. She emphasized the need for further investigation and data segregation to understand the root causes of these infections.

The municipality also faces challenges in maternal and child health, with high mortality rates, caesarean section rates, and low breastfeeding rates. Efforts are being made to address these issues and improve healthcare services in the area.

Desmond Appiah, the Country Director of Clean Air Fund, stressed the importance of specific policies and investigations to tackle the growing health concerns related to air pollution in the municipality. The area’s proximity to busy roads and continuous exposure to vehicle fumes contribute to the pollution levels.

With the construction of a new government-managed health facility in the Ayawaso West Municipality, there are hopes for enhanced healthcare services. The upcoming 100-bed district hospital at Roman Ridge is part of the government’s Agenda 111 program and aims to improve healthcare access for residents in the area.
