A Finance professor from the University of Ghana Business School, Godfred Bokpin, has expressed support for the country’s stance on the LGBTQ+ issue. He believes that the decision to declare a position on the controversial topic is justified given the global debate around sexual orientation.
During an appearance on JoyNews’ Newsfile, Professor Bokpin emphasized the importance of Ghana taking a clear stance on such matters, especially as other countries have responded firmly to the issue. He stated, “It is just the right thing that the country has done.”
While acknowledging his lack of expertise in legal matters, Professor Bokpin highlighted that in economics, policies often reflect the cultural values of the people. Therefore, enacting a law based on cultural principles is reasonable and justified.
He explained, “In macro-economic policy formulation, if you talk about the fiscal policy of a country it mirrors the country’s culture as well.” Professor Bokpin further emphasized the significance of cultural and moral values in shaping policies, including tax policy and other economic measures.
His remarks come amidst the recent passage of the anti-LGBTQ+ bill in Ghana, which has sparked debate among civil society organizations and stakeholders. Some critics argue that enacting laws based on culture is regressive, but Professor Bokpin believes that the bill has brought unity among the populace.
Overall, the professor’s perspective on the issue highlights the complexity of balancing cultural values and legal frameworks in addressing sensitive societal issues.
