President Nana Akufo-Addo relieved 24 District Chief Executives (DCEs) of their duties, citing Article 243 (3) b of the Constitution and Section 20 (3) (b) of the Local Government Act, 2014, (Act 936) as the basis for his decision.
There has been speculation that the dismissed DCEs were targeted because they did not campaign for Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia during the flagbearership race of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
However, Akuapem South MP, Osei Bonsu Amoah, has refuted claims that the dismissal was politically motivated, stating that such allegations have no basis at all.
He mentioned that there are some places where the DCEs did not campaign for Vice President Bawumia, but they are still in office. He further stated that it is at the president’s discretion as to whether such a person should continue to serve or be replaced by someone else.
The specific reasons for the dismissal of the DCEs are still unknown, despite the Minister of State at the Ministry of Local Government, Decentralization, and Rural Development denying that the decision was politically driven.
The dismissal has sparked controversy and differing opinions on the motives behind it.
