Deputy Majority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin has put a halt on the third reading of the Anti-LGBTQ bill today, preventing the passing of the controversial legislation.
Afenyo-Markin clarified that while he supports the Promotion of Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values bill, he opposes the provision that would lead to the imprisonment of individuals accused of engaging in or promoting LGBTQ activities.
He suggested that this proposed punitive action would not be effective in rehabilitating those accused and instead argued for the consideration of community service as an alternative.
He maintained that the bill’s punitive actions would not contribute to maintaining Ghanaian family values and ensuring proper human sexual rights.
However, sponsor of the bill, Sam George, rejects Afenyo-Markin’s argument, stating that it does not hold water.
This difference of opinion highlights the ongoing debate and controversy surrounding the bill.
