The Director of the Ghana Education Service (GES), Dr Eric Nkansah, has announced that power has been restored to Accra Academy after the school experienced a total blackout. According to JoyNews, Dr. Nkansah explained that the Free SHS Secretariat, responsible for paying the electricity bills for 704 secondary schools in Ghana, has worked with the Electricity Company of Ghana to settle all outstanding bills and restore power to the school.
Dr. Nkansah assured stakeholders that all payments are up to date, and no further disconnections are expected. He also revealed that a meeting has been scheduled between the Free SHS Secretariat, the Ghana Education Service, and the Electricity Company of Ghana to ensure that payments are made on time to prevent future disruptions.
The blackout at Accra Academy raised concerns among guardians and stakeholders, with the school owing approximately GHS500,000 in post-paid electricity bills since July 2023. ECG’s External Communications Manager emphasized that the school will not be reconnected until certain basic requirements are met as part of the company’s revenue mobilization drive.
Dr. Nkansah also expressed his commitment to working with the Electricity Company of Ghana to prevent further disruptions in various secondary schools. This resolution comes after widespread controversy about the state of utility in second-cycle institutions across the country.
This move is a positive step towards ensuring that secondary schools have continuous access to electricity without disruptions, and it will also alleviate concerns among stakeholders about the state of utility in these institutions.
