Rocky Dawuni, a three-time Ghanaian Grammy Awards nominee, recently discussed the relevance of record labels in the music industry.
During the African Music Week Accra event on December 27, 2024, at the GIPC Conference Room, the ‘In Ghana’ singer highlighted the significant transformation in the music business.
He pointed out that with the emergence of digital platforms like MySpace, individual artists now have the opportunity to thrive without necessarily relying on record labels.
Rocky Dawuni shared his personal experience of leveraging digital media to propel his career, emphasizing that African musicians can now reach a global audience directly through online platforms.
The musician emphasized the importance of organization, monetization, and direct marketing for African artists to succeed in the industry. He stated, “Right now what we need to know is that we don’t really need record labels as a continent.
We just need to be very well organized, have our music monetized and also have a means to market our music directly to the listening public.”
The debate around the role of record labels in the music industry has been ongoing, with differing opinions on the benefits and drawbacks of signing with a label.
