Telecel Ghana recently recognized renowned reggae-dancehall musician Epixode at the 26th Telecel Ghana Music Awards (TGMAs), presenting him with the prestigious Music for Good Award.

This accolade celebrates his commitment to purpose-driven music, particularly his advocacy against illegal mining and its harmful environmental effects in mining communities.

Epixode was awarded a distinguished plaque along with a cash prize of GH¢20,000. This recognition highlights his efforts to raise awareness about one of Ghana’s most pressing issues—illegal mining, commonly known as “galamsey.”

Through his impactful song “Chooboi,” he draws attention to the severe consequences of galamsey, including the destruction of forest reserves, pollution of rivers, and threats to local livelihoods.

The Music for Good Award is designed to honor artists who leverage their influence for positive initiatives, encompassing areas such as environmental sustainability, education, health, and social development.

During the TGMAs, Ing. Patricia Obo-Nai, CEO of Telecel Ghana, conveyed the company’s appreciation for musicians who advocate for meaningful change.

“Each year, we look forward to acknowledging artists who extend their influence beyond music to foster positive societal impacts. I encourage our musicians to harness their star power to address critical issues affecting lives,” she stated.

In a heartfelt video message following his award, Epixode expressed his gratitude to Telecel Ghana and encouraged fellow musicians to use their platforms for transformation rather than mere popularity.

“Our melodies and lyrics should inspire change, provoke thought, and challenge the societal issues that bind us. Let’s unite in our voices to combat galamsey now,” he urged.

The award has evolved over the years, previously known as the Green Award, which recognized artists for their social contributions.

Notable past recipients include gospel artist Eugene Zuta for his advocacy against human trafficking, Worlasi for his tree-planting initiative “Giving Shade,” and Stonebwoy, who was commended for his song “Greedy Men,” addressing socio-economic challenges in the country.

The Music for Good Award truly underscores the significant role of music in fostering social change within Ghana. Celebrating its 26th year, the TGMAs remains the premier annual event recognizing exceptional talent across various music genres in the nation.
