Ghanaian highlife legend Lucky Mensah recently spoke out about the enduring significance of the highlife genre during an illuminating interview on Connect 97.1 FM’s mid-morning show with host Nana Yaw Gyebi.
The iconic musician, known for hits like “Aduu sum) akwadu,” passionately expressed his belief in the timeless value of highlife music, dismissing claims that the genre has lost its importance.
Mensah confidently stated, “Highlife has not lost its value as far as Ghana music is concerned; highlife can never die, and I don’t regret choosing the highlife genre.”
Mensah’s views are shared by many in the Ghanaian music scene, evident in his popular songs such as “I miss you” and “Old school.” He acknowledged the ongoing debate surrounding highlife’s relevance but highlighted its resurgence, attributing platforms like TikTok to its renewed popularity.
Despite acknowledging the challenges facing contemporary highlife music, such as changes in rhythm and a lack of lyrical depth among newer artists, Mensah encouraged the younger generation to draw inspiration from highlife veterans like Ampadu, Oheneba Kisi, Kofi B, and Ofori Amposah.
He stressed the importance of preserving the essence of highlife while also embracing innovation in order to keep the genre alive and thriving.
