Seek permission from copyright owners before broadcasting – NFA to TV channels

The National Film Authority (NFA) has recently made a significant directive to all television channels in Ghana. The directive requires these channels to obtain permission from copyright owners before broadcasting any films on their platforms. This decision was made in response to multiple complaints received by the NFA from global film distributors regarding the unauthorized broadcasting of movies by certain terrestrial channels and media houses in Ghana.

In a statement signed by the Executive Secretary of the NFA, Juliet Yaa Asantewaa Asante, it was stated that terrestrial channel owners and media houses must assess all movies currently being aired on their platforms. They are required to verify that the necessary authorizations from the creators/copyright owners have been obtained for each movie. If it is found that a particular movie is being broadcast without the required authorization, the channel owners or media houses must immediately cease airing the movie until the necessary authorization is obtained.

The NFA, established by the Government of Ghana under the Development and Classification of Film Act 935, is responsible for enforcing the legal framework for the production, regulation, and development of the Ghanaian film industry. The agency also oversees the distribution, exhibition, and marketing of films in the country, as well as other related matters.

This directive aims to regulate and streamline the film ecosystem in Ghana and ensure that copyright owners’ rights are respected. By requiring television channels to seek permission from copyright owners before broadcasting films, the NFA is taking a step towards protecting the intellectual property of filmmakers and fostering a more structured and legally compliant film industry in Ghana.
