National Theatre set to honour Prof Martin Owusu with play titled ‘The Legend of Aku Sika’

The National Theatre of Ghana is gearing up to pay homage to the esteemed Professor Martin Owusu with the upcoming production of ‘The Legend of Aku Sika.’

Scheduled to run for four days, the play will kick off on Saturday, June 1st and 2nd, and will continue on June 8th and 9th, 2024.

Professor Martin Owusu is a well-known scriptwriter and seasoned lecturer at the Department of Theatre Arts at the University of Ghana. He is highly respected for his valuable contributions to the advancement of Ghana’s arts and culture.

The National Theatre, along with its three resident groups—the National Dance Company, National Drama Company, and the National Symphony Orchestra— in collaboration with Image Bureau and April Communications, will be honoring Professor Martin Owusu.

Written by the distinguished playwright, actor, and director himself, ‘The Legend of Aku Sika’ will be the highlight of the event.

Actress and media personality Naa Ashorkor, who also serves as the CEO of April Communications, will be making her debut as the production director, with support from George Quaye, CEO of Image Bureau.

Prof. Martin Owusu’s ‘The Legend of Aku Sika’ previously earned him an ECRAG award in the late 90s. The stage play is an adaptation of the ancient folktale of Aku Sika. It is set to be a captivating and culturally significant production that honors Professor Martin Owusu’s legacy in the Ghanaian arts scene.
