Ghanaian actor, Clement Bonney, popularly known as Mr. Beautiful, recently shed light on the challenges facing Ghana’s local movie industry, Kumawood.
In an interview with Joy Prime’s Roselyn Felli on the Changes show the actor attributed the struggles of Kumawood to the inclusion of insults in the scripts of characters.
Mr. Beautiful expressed concerns about the use of insults in Kumawood movies, stressing that the derogatory language used in the films could have negative effects.
He highlighted that many Ghanaians living abroad discouraged their children from watching Kumawood movies to prevent them from imitating the disrespectful behavior portrayed on screen.
This, in turn, impacted the industry as viewership from both Ghanaians and foreigners decreased.
The actor also revealed that he faced challenges within the industry for advocating against the use of insults in scripts.
Despite his efforts to advise producers and industry players, he was often ignored. Additionally, Mr. Beautiful shared his experience of being asked to only speak Twi in certain movie roles, a request he rejected, leading to him losing those opportunities.
Furthermore, Mr. Beautiful pointed out the industry’s failure to adapt to digital marketing trends and advancements in filmmaking.
He emphasized that while other countries were progressing with digital innovations, Ghanaian filmmakers were still producing traditional parts 1 and 2 movies, causing the industry to fall behind.
In conclusion, Mr. Beautiful’s insights shed light on the underlying issues affecting Kumawood’s success and the need for the industry to evolve with the changing times.
