The Ghanaian film industry recently celebrated the legendary filmmaker, Kwaw Ansah, at the second edition of the Africa Cinema Summit’s Legacy Awards.
Ansah was honoured with the prestigious Legendary Award in recognition of his invaluable contributions to the growth and development of the industry.
Known for groundbreaking works such as ‘Love Brewed in the African Pot’ and ‘Heritage Africa,’ Kwaw Ansah has been a driving force behind Ghanaian cinema for decades. His films not only entertain audiences but also shed light on important social issues and cultural heritage.
The Legacy Awards took place on Wednesday, October 9, 2024, at the Movenpick Ambassador Hotel in Accra as part of the Africa Cinema Summit. The event honored stakeholders in the film industry across the continent who have made significant contributions to the industry.
Notable honorees included celebrated Ghanaian actress Yvonne Nelson and Nigerian stars AY, Kunle Afolayan, and Funke Akindele. AY received two awards for his significant contributions to the industry, while other Ghanaian honorees included Shirley Frimpong Manso, Leila Djansi, and Yolo Producer Ivan Quashigah.
During the ceremony, the prestigious Legendary Award was presented to Kwaw Ansah, with the award received on his behalf by his son. The award was praised by Juliet Asante, who emphasized the importance of Ansah’s work and its impact on the industry.
The Africa Cinema Summit, organized by Ghana’s National Film Authority (NFA), has attracted a global audience, including executives from the African diaspora and representatives from investment bodies like Afreximbank and IFC. The summit aims to foster collaboration, innovation, and sustainable growth within the African cinema industry.
The summit featured appearances by iconic British actor Idris Elba and the Ga Mantse, King Tackie Teiko Tsuru II. The Minister of Tourism, Creative Arts and Culture, Mr. Andrew Egyapa Mercer, also graced the event with his presence.
