Ghana first science fiction movie goes global via MiSciFi

Ghanaian filmmakers have been making a mark on the global stage, with recent successes like “Children of the Mountain,” “The Burial of Kojo,” and “The Fisherman.”

These films have garnered awards and recognition at various festivals, putting Ghana’s film industry back in the spotlight.

Two standout films from the end of 2024 were Shirley Frimpong-Manso’s “Two of a Kind” and Peter Sedufia’s “One Night Guests,” which received positive feedback from audiences in London and Nigeria respectively.

In 2025, a new wave of innovation hit the Ghanaian film industry with “The B.A.T.U Project: ADAM THE FIRST.” Directed by Majeed Sayibu, the science fiction film stars Agbeko “Bex” Mortty, Naa Ashorkor, Majeed Suhuyini, and Akorfa Edjeani, among others.

The story follows Adam, a representative of the United African Federation sent to repopulate a new planet after an apocalyptic event on Earth.

Filmed in the salt fields of Sege and Bolgatanga, the movie showcases Ghana’s stunning landscapes transformed into an alien planet.

With themes of Climate Change, Afrofuturism, S.T.E.M, and Space Exploration, the film aims to tell African stories in a unique and captivating way.

“The B.A.T.U Project: ADAM THE FIRST” has been selected for the Miami International Science Fiction Film Festival and nominated for the prestigious BEACON Award.

This nomination puts Ghana on the map as a contender in the global filmmaking industry, with the awards ceremony scheduled for January 18th and 19th in Miami, Florida, USA.
