In a significant move to enhance the Ghanaian film industry, the Screenwriters Guild of Ghana (SWGG), the Producers Guild of Ghana (PGG), and the National Film Authority (NFA) convened to harmonize their efforts.
Their primary goal is to establish global standards for filmmaking in Ghana and foster a sustainable, competitive industry.
James Gardiner, Deputy Executive Secretary of the NFA, highlighted the authority’s dedication to implementing statutory frameworks that elevate Ghanaian storytelling in films to international standards.
This includes a strong emphasis on bolstering copyright laws and nurturing collaborative relationships with various creative guilds across the nation.
The SWGG expressed enthusiasm for collaborating with the NFA on vital initiatives, particularly its flagship program, Pitch Ahoy. This initiative is specifically designed to support budding filmmakers and innovative film projects.
Demonstrating its commitment, the NFA is actively pursuing grants for filmmakers and engaging in discussions to streamline access for international productions seeking Ghanaian crews, equipment, and logistical support.
Additionally, the NFA is gearing up for a National Film Dialogue, aimed at engaging stakeholders on pressing topics such as insurance for equipment and logistics. Community representatives from the film industry will also participate, providing valuable input to address current challenges.
During the discussions, both the SWGG and PGG stressed the necessity of acknowledging all sectors involved in film production, advocating for their integration into the ever-evolving industry landscape.
The guilds also called for improved incentives for local and foreign productions, ensuring Ghanaian crew members are included and treated fairly in foreign projects filmed in Ghana.
This collaboration signals a united effort to transform Ghana into a vibrant hub for film production that not only showcases its unique stories but also meets the demands of the global marketplace.
