An exciting new animated series, “Iwájú,” created by Walt Disney Animation Studios and Pan-African Entertainment Company Kugali, made its debut on Disney+ on February 28, 2024.
The series will now be available on Disney Channel across Africa starting this April and May. Viewers in territories without access to Disney+ will have the opportunity to watch the series on Channel 303 of the DStv platform.
“Iwájú” is a futuristic coming-of-age story set in Lagos, Nigeria, and follows the adventures of Tola, a young girl from a wealthy island, and her best friend Kole, a tech expert, as they navigate the secrets and dangers of their worlds. Director Olufikayo Ziki Adeola describes the series as a tribute to African storytelling and the vibrant city of Lagos, hoping to inspire more Africans to share their stories.
Christine Service, Senior Vice President and General Manager of The Walt Disney Company Africa, praises “Iwájú” as a celebration of creativity and storytelling excellence, showcasing the talent and innovation of African filmmakers. In addition to the series, a mobile game titled “Disney Iwájú: Rising Chef” and an Original Soundtrack Score have been released to enhance the audience’s experience.
The collaboration between Kugali and Disney marks a significant milestone in African storytelling, with “Iwájú” being the first animated series of its kind. Alongside the series, a documentary special titled “Iwájú: A Day Ahead” premiered on Disney+, chronicling the journey of the founders of Kugali as they brought their dream of collaborating with Walt Disney Animation Studios to life.
“Iwájú” will be broadcast on Disney Channel from April 22-26, with a special marathon on April 27 leading up to the final episode. Repeat broadcasts will run from April 29 to May 4, with another marathon on Africa Day, May 25. The series aims to captivate audiences with its unique storytelling and imaginative world.
