Alexander Afenyo-Markin, the Majority Leader of Ghana’s parliament, recently extended a warm gesture to the cast and crew of ‘The Gods Are Not to Blame.’
The group was invited to his office at Parliament and later treated to a lunch gathering. This gesture came after Afenyo-Markin, who is also the Member of Parliament for Effutu, attended the 13th and final showing of the play at the National Theatre in Accra on March 21st, 22nd, and 23rd, 2024.
During the meeting, Afenyo-Markin commended the team on their performance and conveyed his enthusiasm for the arts, particularly theatre.
He pledged his support for the arts in Ghana and offered to serve as a patron for the industry. Additionally, he requested a cost estimate from the executive director of the National Theatre, Madam Amy Frimpong, for the renovation of the theatre to facilitate assistance in the process.
‘The gods are not to blame’ is an adaptation of the original Greek play, ‘Oedipus Rex’ by Sophocles, brought to life by Image Bureau in collaboration with April Communications and the National Theatre. Directed by George Quaye, the play received excellent reviews during its run.
Afenyo-Markin’s commitment to supporting the arts community in Ghana is admirable, and his active involvement in promoting local talent and cultural expression is a positive step towards fostering the creative industry in the country.
His dedication to the arts sector is commendable and reflects his passion for nurturing talent and artistic expression in Ghana.
