The highly anticipated 2024 edition of Ghana’s popular street art festival, Chale Wote, is just around the corner, and preparations are in full swing for the main event in August.
Organised by ACCRA [dot] ALT in partnership with Redd Kat Pictures and Chale Wote Street Art Projekt, applications are now open for artists interested in participating in this year’s celebration.
With the theme “And Now An End To The Empire Of Horrors,” Chale Wote 2024 draws inspiration from the rich history of Africa, particularly the Gulf of Guinea. The festival aims to highlight the tales of fantastical and mortal gods from this region, serving as allegories for the social conditions influenced by colonialism.
Exploring the origins, death, and rebirth of the Gulf of Guinea’s sacred sciences, long lost and buried, Chale Wote 2024 will showcase a variety of counterhegemonic narratives through art and entertainment.
Interested artists with at least 2 years of professional experience are invited to submit their applications. While a formal art education is not a requirement, a strong commitment to artistic practice and media is essential.
Proposed artwork can take any form or medium, as long as it demonstrates innovation and a deep understanding of contemporary art. Artists are encouraged to create site-specific works for the Osu metropolitan area during CHALE WOTE 2024.
The week-long festival will run from August 19 to August 25, 2024. Selected artists will be required to complete their works from August 10 to 18 and have them ready for display throughout the festival.
The deadline for applications is May 1, 2024. This is a unique opportunity for artists to showcase their creativity to a global audience, so don’t miss out!
International artists selected to participate are encouraged to seek funding for travel, living expenses, and production costs for their work.
To apply, artists must submit a current resume, a concept note for their festival project, and examples of their work from the past 2 years. Submissions can include still images or videos, depending on the nature of the artwork.
For more information on the application process, including image and video specifications, artists can email [email protected].
Chale Wote 2024 promises to be a celebration of art, culture, and creativity like never before. Join in and be part of this immersive experience that celebrates African heritage and artistic expression.
