Why is Adidas banning sales of the ‘44’ Germany Euro 2024 shirt?

Germany, host of Euro 2024, is currently embroiled in controversy surrounding the number 44 shirt of the home team.

The design has been deemed controversial due to its resemblance to the Nazi SS insignia, prompting Adidas to take the unprecedented step of halting sales of the shirt.

Historian Michael König expressed concerns about the design of the German football kit, citing the symbolism associated with the SS, a paramilitary force responsible for the genocide of millions of Jewish people across Europe. The German Football Association (DFB) and its partners were responsible for the shirt numbers, according to Adidas.

Despite having the designs reviewed by UEFA during the creation process, Adidas maintains that any similarity to the SS rune was unintentional. A company spokesman reiterated their commitment to opposing xenophobia, anti-Semitism, violence, and hatred in any form.

In response to the criticism, the German national team released a promotional video defending the unconventional pink away kit, which was designed to represent the diversity of the German fanbase and population. Players and legends featured in the video refuted claims that the kit was unsuitable for the team.

Germany has been donning Adidas kits since the 1950s, but Nike is poised to take over as the manufacturer from 2027. Prices for the official Germany Euro 2024 shirts range from £55 for children to £140 for long-sleeved authentic men’s shirts.

If you are looking to purchase a Germany Euro 2024 shirt, you can find them on the Adidas website or through various outlets online. High-street sporting goods stores may also carry the shirts, but it is advisable to check for availability beforehand.
