MLB legend Willie Mays, often regarded as one of the greatest baseball players of all time, recently paid tribute to his late wife Mae Louise Allen, who passed away in April 2013 at the age of 74. The couple had been married for over 40 years.
Mays and Mae first met in 1961 at a Harlem nightclub and tied the knot a decade later. Mae, who often stayed out of the spotlight, was described as a pioneer in single adoptions in San Francisco. She graduated from Howard University with a master’s degree in social work and dedicated her career to child welfare.
On her passing, Giants president Larry Baer expressed his condolences to Willie and his family, stating, “I was honored to know Mae and to witness how Willie loved and cared for her.” Mae’s death came after a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease.
Willie Mays later passed away on June 18, 2024, at the age of 93. The Giants confirmed his death in a statement, but did not provide a cause. Before Mae, Mays was married to Margherite Wendell Chapman and adopted a son named Michael.
Willie is also survived by his godson, Barry Bonds, the son of his former Giants teammate, Bobby Bonds.
The legacy of Willie Mays on and off the field continues to be celebrated, with tributes pouring in for the baseball icon and his late wife Mae Louise Allen.
