Florida State University student Elizabeth “Ellie” Sims tragically lost her life in a hit-and-run collision near campus on April 29, 2024. Sims, a 20-year-old sophomore from Franklin, Tennessee, was a beloved member of the Alpha Chi Omega sorority and involved in various campus activities, including the Honors College and running.
The fatal incident occurred at a busy intersection near FSU’s campus, where Sims was struck by a vehicle while using the crosswalk. Despite efforts from witnesses to provide aid, Sims succumbed to her injuries at the scene. Friends and family remembered her as a vibrant and positive individual with an infectious smile.
In response to her untimely passing, the FSU community came together to mourn the loss of Sims. President Richard McCullough expressed condolences and offered counseling services to those affected by the tragedy.
A GoFundMe campaign initiated by Johannah Paiva and a memorial fund established by her sorority sisters have both exceeded their fundraising goals, reflecting the outpouring of support for Sims’ family during this difficult time.
The driver responsible for the hit-and-run, 18-year-old Willis Trueblood Jr., was swiftly located and charged with leaving the scene of a crash involving death. Trueblood Jr. claimed that he panicked after hitting Sims and drove away from the scene out of fear. He has entered a plea of not guilty and awaits further legal proceedings.
