Jonathan Yudelman, a postdoctoral research scholar at Arizona State University’s School of Civic and Economic Thought and Leadership, has been placed on leave following a viral video showing him involved in a confrontation with a woman in a hijab at a pro-Israel rally outside of ASU on Sunday, May 5, 2024.

Yudelman, according to his biography, is an assistant professor of Political Theory in Intellectual Foundations at UATX and has held postdoctoral positions at several prestigious universities. His research focuses on early modern political theory, sources of political authority, and the intersection of politics and religion.

The incident at the pro-Israel rally, captured on video and shared on social media, shows Yudelman in a heated exchange with the woman, with him being accused of disrespecting her religious boundaries. The video has sparked outrage and calls for his removal from ASU.

ASU released a statement saying they are investigating the allegations against Yudelman and that he will remain on leave pending the outcome of the investigation. Other organizations, including the Arizona chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations, have condemned the incident and called for his arrest and removal from his position.

The incident has reignited discussions around academic integrity, respect for diversity, and the responsibilities of faculty members both inside and outside of the classroom.

Yudelman’s future at ASU remains uncertain as the university continues its investigation into the matter.
