Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, commonly known as AOC, is seeking a fourth congressional term in office. On June 25, 2024, she emerged victorious in the Democratic Primary, defeating Marty Dolan.
Following her win, on July 10 of the same year, AOC took a bold step by introducing articles of impeachment against Supreme Court justices Samuel Alito and Clarence Thomas.
AOC accused Alito and Thomas of failing to disclose gifts they received while serving on the court. “Justice Thomas and Alito’s repeated failure over decades to disclose that they received millions of dollars in gifts from individuals with business before the court is explicitly against the law,” AOC stated.
She argued that their actions posed a significant threat to the American rule of law and democracy, warranting impeachment.
This move by AOC came following a protest in Washington, DC, on July 19, 2022, where she and 34 other individuals, including fellow politicians Carolyn Maloney, Nydia Velazquez, Jackie Speier, and Bonnie Watson Coleman, were arrested.
The protest was in response to the SCOTUS decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, sparking discussions on abortion rights and the Hyde Amendment.
AOC’s political journey began in April 2017 when she launched her campaign for the Democratic primary representative for New York’s 14th congressional district.
She made history by winning the election on June 26, 2018, becoming the youngest woman to serve in the US Congress. Despite facing challenges and threats, she successfully secured re-election in November 2020, emphasizing her commitment to effective leadership rather than seeking titles for the sake of it.
