In an ever-evolving world where technology continues to shape the way we connect with one another, a new art installation in New York City is taking communication to a whole new level.

The Portal, created by artist Benediktas Gylys, provides a direct link between the bustling Flatiron district in NYC and the vibrant streets of Dublin, Ireland.

This innovative art sculpture aims to bridge the gap between strangers across borders and bring people together in a unique and engaging way. The Portals serve as a platform for individuals to interact with each other in real-time, despite being thousands of miles apart.

With a massive eight by eight feet video screen, The Portal allows visitors in both New York City and Dublin to see each other and communicate through live streams. While the installation does not have audio capabilities, visitors can still engage with one another through gestures, signs, or even a little dance.

James Mettham, President of the Flatiron NoMad Partnership, believes that simple communication is at the core of The Portal experience. Whether it’s a wave, a greeting, or a small gesture, the installation aims to showcase the unity and connection that exists between individuals, regardless of their geographical location.

The decision to connect New York City and Dublin was intentional, as both cities share a rich history of immigration, culture, and literature. The Portals serve as a reminder of the ties that bind us together, even when we are separated by vast distances.

If you’re interested in experiencing The Portal for yourself, you can find it located at the Flatiron South Public Plaza near the iconic Flatiron Building in NYC. The installation opened its doors on May 8, 2024, and will be available for public viewing 24/7 for the next six months, concluding in the fall of 2024.

As you step into The Portal, you’ll have the opportunity to connect with individuals in Dublin at their portal located on O’Connell Street, offering a truly immersive and interactive experience that transcends borders and brings people together in a unique and inspiring way.
