On November 8, 2010, police in the Toronto area received an emergency call reporting a home invasion. But as they delved deeper into the investigation, they uncovered a more disturbing truth.
Jennifer Pan, born to Huei Hann and Bich Ha Pan on June 17, 1986, in Markham, Ontario, was implicated in a deadly conspiracy. Her parents had enrolled her in various lessons, including piano, figure skating, and martial arts, showing their support for her growth and development.
The tragic event unfolded when 24-year-old Jennifer called the police to report that intruders had tied her up and shot her parents. Sadly, her mother, Bich Ha, was found dead at the scene, having been shot at close range. However, her father barely survived his injuries.
Further investigation by the police revealed a chilling reality. Hann, who had awoken from a coma on November 12, disclosed that he witnessed Jennifer communicating with one of the assailants “like a friend.” Subsequently, after a 10-hour interrogation, Jennifer confessed to orchestrating the murder plot, seeking financial gain from her parents’ inheritance and due to personal conflicts.
Before the deadly scheme, her parents had uncovered Jennifer’s deceit about her educational achievements. The elaborate web of lies and deception led to the heinous crime that Jennifer orchestrated.
Ultimately, Jennifer Pan was convicted of first-degree murder and attempted murder in December 2015. She received a life sentence for attempting to kill her father and life imprisonment with no chance of parole for 25 years for her mother’s murder.
While incarcerated at the Grand Valley Institution for Women in Kitchener, Ontario, Jennifer appealed her sentence in May 2023 and was granted a new trial.
The case of Jennifer Pan is the subject of Netflix’s documentary, “What Jennifer Did,” set to premiere on April 10, 2024. The documentary will delve into the intricate web of lies Jennifer spun and the tragic consequences that ensued.
