The leader of the popular Ghanaian music duo, Keche, Andrew Kofi Cudjoe, has shared his perspective on why politicians should avoid using the sensitive issue of illegal mining, known as Galamsey, as a campaign message.
In an interview with Amansan Krakye, Keche Andrew pointed out that approximately 10 percent of Ghanaians are involved in Galamsey, making it a delicate topic for politicians to address.
According to Keche Andrew, many Ghanaians, particularly those who are unemployed or lack formal education, turn to Galamsey as a means of making a living when they are unable to secure office jobs or start their own businesses due to a lack of capital.
He emphasized that these individuals are primarily focused on making money and are often unconcerned about the environmental consequences of their actions.
Keche Andrew highlighted that previous presidents have made efforts to combat Galamsey, but he believes that exploiting the issue for political gain could alienate a significant portion of the population.
He suggested that politicians are hesitant to confront Galamsey operators due to fears of losing votes from their supporters involved in the illegal activity.
