New York City politicians are calling on Whoopi Goldberg to apologize for suggesting on air that a local bakery had declined to make her a batch of desserts for her birthday because of her political beliefs.
Staten Island Borough President Vito Fossella joined Holtermann’s Bakery owner Jill Holtermann at a news conference in front of the 145-year-old institution in Staten Island.
Fossella criticized Goldberg for “making stuff up to suit their needs” and “besmirching and defaming” the bakery.
The Republican politician emphasized that a good business person doesn’t care about anyone’s politics and explained that the bakery didn’t want to commit to a large order due to a malfunctioning boiler.
Holtermann, overwhelmed by the support during the public spat, expressed gratitude for the flood of orders that the bakery has received. Representatives for Goldberg have not responded to requests for comment.
Goldberg, an outspoken liberal, had mentioned on “The View” that the bakery had refused to make her favorite dessert for her birthday, suggesting that it was due to her politics. However, Holtermann clarified that it was an equipment issue and not a political stance.
