The 2024 Met Gala is gearing up to be a highlight of the year, and it’s no wonder with a star-studded committee for the annual fundraiser.
Zendaya, Chris Hemsworth, Bad Bunny, and Jennifer Lopez have been appointed as co-chairs of The Costume Institute event by the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
The prestigious gathering, spearheaded by Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour, will also have Loewe creative director Jonathan Anderson and TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew as honorary chairs.
The gala, set for May 6, will see Hemsworth’s first appearance on the Met Gala red carpet. Meanwhile, Bad Bunny will be returning for the third time, Zendaya for the sixth time, and Jennifer Lopez marks her 14th appearance.
Met Gala co-chairs are the faces of the event, and aside from promoting and publicizing, they also help with fundraising and welcoming guests. It is also rumored that they might take center stage with performances during the event, although details of what happens at the event are usually kept under wraps.
This year’s theme is centered on The Costume Institute’s spring exhibition, titled “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion.”
The theme is said to “reactivate the sensory capacities of masterworks in the Museum’s collection through first-hand research, conservation analysis, and diverse technologies—from cutting-edge tools, artificial intelligence, and computer-generated imagery to traditional formats of x-rays, video animation, light projection, and soundscapes.”
The dress code is in alignment with the theme, and guests are expected to embody “The Garden of Time,” inspired by JG Ballard’s 1962 short story of the same name.
Fans of the gala can look forward to celebrities donning costumes adorned with florals and vibrant colors. Andrew Bolton, Curator in Charge of The Costume Institute, expressed that the show aims to activate a sensorial appreciation of fashion. It’s no doubt that the 2024 Met Gala is set to be an unforgettable, fashionable affair.
