Francis Doku: Why Tourism minister should be included in Ghana’s cabinet

Last week, President John Dramani Mahama’s new administration held its first cabinet meeting, and it was noted that the Minister of Tourism was conspicuously absent from the list of ministers present.

This exclusion raised eyebrows as tourism plays a vital role in Ghana’s economy and national identity. Traditionally, the Minister of Tourism has always been a part of the cabinet, prompting concerns about the government’s commitment to the sector.

The cabinet includes important ministries such as Finance, Interior, Health, Defence, Attorney General, Energy, Education, Trade, Lands and Natural Resources, Foreign Affairs, Food and Agriculture, Communication, Roads and Highways, Environment, Science and Technology, Works, Housing, Water Resources, Local Government, Gender and Social Protection, and Transport.

However, the absence of the Ministry of Tourism from this list is a cause for concern given the sector’s significant impact on various aspects of national development.

Tourism is not just an industry on its own but also influences infrastructure development, transportation, conservation, education, healthcare, and agriculture.

When tourism thrives, it stimulates investment in infrastructure, promotes conservation of natural resources, fosters cultural exchange, and boosts agribusiness by creating demand for local products.

The exclusion of tourism from the cabinet implies a missed opportunity for economic growth, job creation, and national branding.

The sector is a major contributor to Ghana’s GDP, providing employment opportunities and generating revenue from international visitors. It also serves as a key source of foreign exchange earnings, helping diversify the country’s economy and ensure stable revenue generation.

Moreover, tourism is closely linked to infrastructure development, cultural diplomacy, and youth employment.

By positioning Ghana as a premier tourism destination, the sector has the potential to drive economic growth and enhance the country’s global reputation.

Excluding tourism from cabinet discussions sends the wrong signal to stakeholders and investors, undermining Ghana’s efforts to become a top-tier tourist destination in Africa.

In conclusion, the government must reconsider its decision to exclude the Ministry of Tourism from the cabinet and ensure that the sector receives the attention and support it deserves.
