Botswana hosts 7th Africa Tourism Leadership Forum

Gaborone, the bustling capital city of Botswana, is once again abuzz with activity as the 7th edition of the Africa Tourism Leaders Forum (ATLF) and Awards kicks off.

This prestigious event, taking place at the Gaborone International Convention Centre, brings together top tourism professionals, government officials, and media representatives from across the continent.

The forum, running from September 4-6, 2024, is organized by African Tourism Partners with the support of Botswana Tourism.

With over 500 participants from 43 countries in attendance, this year’s forum is dedicated to the theme “Charting a New Path Forward for Intra-Africa Travel, Tourism, and Investment.”

The focus is on reducing travel restrictions within Africa to promote business growth and facilitate the seamless movement of people.

Key stakeholders from the tourism sector have converged in Gaborone for this significant event, making it a pivotal platform for sharing insights, networking, and fostering new collaborations.

The Vice President of Botswana, Slumber Tsogwane, highlighted the importance of the ATLF in positioning tourism as a critical economic pillar for diversifying African economies.

Botswana’s strategic efforts to establish itself as a premier destination for hosting MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions) were also emphasized.

The country’s tourism sector is a major contributor to the national economy, with significant potential for further growth.

Zurab Pololikashvili, the Secretary-General of the United Tourism (UNWTO), praised Africa’s leadership in shaping its tourism future.

He commended the region for boosting connectivity, regional integration, and intra-African travel. The UNWTO chief also highlighted the positive trend of international arrivals to Africa, with a 5% increase compared to pre-pandemic levels.

During the forum, Botswana was lauded for its strong brand image in tourism, showcasing its rich cultural heritage, diverse wildlife, and unique natural landscapes.

A moment of reflection was observed for the late Minister of Environment and Tourism, Hon. Dumezweni Meshack Mthimkhulu, with condolences extended by the global tourism community.

Elcia Grandcourt, UNWTO’s Regional Director for Africa, underscored the need for strategic investments in intra-Africa travel and tourism.

She praised Botswana’s resilience and innovation in the tourism sector, highlighting its contributions to socio-economic development.

As the ATLF continues, the focus remains on sustainable and inclusive tourism, enhancing intra-Africa travel, and driving economic growth across the continent.

The event not only reaffirms Africa’s commitment to building a thriving tourism industry but also sets a new path forward for tourism and investment in the region.
