Renowned author Barbara Taylor Bradford, famous for her best-selling novel A Woman of Substance, has passed away at the age of 91.

Published in 1979, A Woman of Substance sold an impressive 30 million copies and inspired seven sequels as well as a TV adaptation that remains the most-watched program in Channel 4’s history.

Throughout her career, Taylor Bradford wrote a total of 40 novels, including the Ravenscar, Cavendon, and the House of Falconer series.

Her publisher and editor, Lynne Drew, praised her for breaking new ground with her sweeping epic novels that spanned generations and were not just romances.

Taylor Bradford’s work ethic and dedication to her craft were also highlighted, describing her as an inspiration to millions of readers and writers.

Charlie Redmayne, chief executive of HarperCollins, hailed Taylor Bradford as a truly exceptional writer whose work, especially A Woman of Substance, had a profound impact on readers’ lives.

The novel told the story of Emma Harte, a maid who rises to build and manage a major department store – a tale that resonated with audiences worldwide.

The author’s close friend, actress Jenny Seagrove, who portrayed Emma in the TV adaptation, shared heartfelt memories of Taylor Bradford.

She highlighted the author’s semi-autobiographical approach to storytelling, stating that many women found strength and inspiration in the character of Emma Harte.
