Actor and Member of Parliament (MP) for Ayawaso West Wuogon, John Dumelo, has shared his views on the qualifications required to become a Minister of Tourism, Arts, and Culture in Ghana.
Dumelo emphasized that being a creative alone is not enough to hold such a position, stating that vision and understanding of the sector’s policies are essential.
The Ministry of Tourism, Arts, and Culture was created by former President John Mahama in 2013, in response to calls from stakeholders in the creative arts industry.
The ministry was previously known as the Ministry of Tourism, Culture, and Creative Arts, with a separate ministry for tourism and culture attached to the chieftaincy ministry.
There have been discussions about appointing a creative arts person to the position of Minister of Tourism, Arts, and Culture in President John Mahama’s new government.
Names like Abla Dzifa Gomashie, Baba Sadiq, and Rex Omar have been mentioned as potential appointees due to their experience in the sector.
Dumelo’s comments highlight the importance of having a visionary leader who can champion the well-being and welfare of the creative industry, regardless of their background as a practitioner in the space.
