Iconic Dancehall artist Shatta Wale has spoken out against the recent arrests made by the Ghana Police Service.
The arrests targeted 26 individuals who were engaged in the play of brandishing and firing toy guns, which is a violation of Section 207 of the Criminal Offences Act 1960.
The trend of playing with toy guns began in Kumasi, with young people reminiscing about their childhood and sharing videos of the activity on social media. This quickly caught on and more individuals joined in on the fun.
Shatta Wale took to social media to express his disapproval of the arrests, calling them ‘primitive’. The artiste known for hits like ‘On God’ believes that instead of facing legal action, these individuals could have been guided by the police.
In a post on social media, Shatta Wale wrote, “Arresting ghetto youth for playing with toy guns and failing to guide them on Christmas celebration is the most primitive act in 2024. THE TRUTH – UNLESS THEY KEEL GOD.”
It is clear that Shatta Wale believes that there are better ways to handle such situations than resorting to arrests.
The artiste’s comments have sparked discussions on social media about the role of the police and how they can better engage with the youth in communities.
This incident sheds light on the need for constructive dialogue and guidance for young people, rather than punitive measures.
